Engagement Photo Outfit Tips from a nonbinary Photographer

Here are some engagement photo outfit tips! Other than some technical reasons take everything with a grain of salt and wear what makes you feel best! Which leads us into…

Tip #1 Be YOU!

If you wear a T-shirt and jeans everyday and that’s what makes you feel you best! Then by all means wear a T-shirt and jeans. Personally I LOVE bright colors and clashing patterns, so whenever I get my pictures taken that’s what I wear.

As a trans non-binary person, I feel most affirmed when I’m wearing my binder, so if there is something that makes you most affirmed wear that or bring that! I want to to feel like a your ideal self! Also, if there is something in particular that you can’t change that makes you feel not affirmed then please let me or your photographer know before the shoot so we can pose you and get angles that make you feel you best! For example, even with a binder I can still see a bit of a curve, so for me personally I won’t take pictures from the side, so I don’t draw attention to that.

Tip #2 Wear something that fits like a dream!

The most important thing when picking out and outfit is how it fits. If you love a shirt, but it’s kinda bunchy that’s going to show on camera and look a little awkward. If you typically like a looser fitting shit then don’t wear a super tight fitting shirt to your session.

If you are in LOVE with a fit, but it’s not quite perfect fitting how you’d like it to. Getting it tailored is an amazing option or if your handy with a sewing machine, you could totally do it yourself! TBH I’m awful with a sewing machine so I usually have a friend help me out! We love a talented friend!

Tip #3 Avoid Stripes and Tight Prints

This is simply for no other reason than camera just don’t like it! Cameras have come a long way so if you have a striped piece that is PERFECT definitely reach out to your photographer to see what they think with their particular camera. But I usually just live by that rule of thumb. Another reason is it can be distracting. Don’t get me wrong I am all about patterns and color, but if you want the focus to be your love maybe… I hate to say it… but maybe something toned down it best. For me toned down is going to look a lot different than most, but your session should reflect you and you personality anyway!

Tip #4 Wear what makes you feel like a boss bitch, not what is “flattering” for your body type

We have all seen those posts that are like “if you have broad shoulder do this to make them look slimmer” or “if you stomach is completely flat don’t wear a crop top.” Well to hell with that!! If you look like a bad bitch in a crop top, THEN WEAR A CROP TOP! These are pictures for you and your partner(s), so it really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. There is no set of rules for everyone. You get to make up those rules based on what feels best and what you think looks best!

Tip #5 Wear comfortable clothes or bring a change of comfortable clothes

I LOVE to get pictures full of movement and emotions and that can be a little hard if you can’t move your arms. We get to have some many more options for poses if you are able to move in you clothes. If you can barely move in your clothes the pictures can end up looking stiff, and personally I HATE stiff poses. This is super important if you are taking pictures outside and especially if there is any hiking involved. At least bring a change of shoes. Hiking in heels… yeah no!

Tip #6 Wear complimentary outfits or matching outfits

You’re for the most part going to be together in your pictures so I recommend picking outfits that go together. Or if you really want to go the extra mile matching outfits so cute! But again if you want to wear completely different outfits do what makes you feel best!

Bonus tip!

If you’re taking pictures at the beach or near a body of what either wear clothes you can get wet in or bring a swimsuit. I am a HUGE fan of engagement photos in the water! This isn’t a must…. But also they are my favorite for a reason! Plus you can always change your mind and it doesn’t hurt to have options.

And after those tips if you’re still not certain of what to wear Pinterest is awesome for getting so inspiration and feel free to reach out to your photographer for any advice or specific questions!
